Brief History :
The department of psychology was established in RajaramCollege in the year 1961-62. Earlier psychology was a part of department of philosophy and was taught by lectures in philosophy at the level of BA I and II
The department of psychology enjoyed a status of an independent discipline in 1961-62. The first head of the department was Shri. Dhuley. It was initiated with five students offering Psychology at the special level.
The pressing demand of the student for the postgraduate faculty resulted in the commencement of postgraduate classes in 1970. Earlier the students had to reach either pune or Bombay universities for postgraduate studies In the year 1972 , the department psychology was functioning party in Shivaji university , Kolhapur where only theory lectures were conducted and practicals were arranged in the laboratory at Rajaram college , Kolhapur. This was a temporary arrangement and Shri. M.D. Awasthi was the head of the department then. An independent PG department was started in the college under the headship of Dr. V. V. Jogawar in the year 1979-80. Being the only postgraduate department of psychology in the jurisdiction of Shivaji University, there was a lot of rush of the students. Many a times the applications received for the post graduate classes courses in the intake capacity. This trend continuous till date.
The laboratory of psychology is well-equipped with apparatus and instruments. The department arranges seminars for PG students. It also arranges visit to mental retarded schools and industries so as to observe MR students and workers in the industry. The department arranges guest lectures of experts in the field of psychology and also arranges exhibitions of psychological apparatus, instruments and different psychological tests. Department conducts value added courses. Our students also presented research papers in different State and National conferences and in ‘AVISHKAR’ also
